Where Spiritual Claims Meet Scientific Questions

For each topic we keep three things separate: what spiritual traditions claim, what has actually been observed by research, and what remains genuinely unknown. We don't use quantum physics as proof of metaphysical claims.

Illustrative summaries. The entries below are written to demonstrate the format and reflect broad scientific consensus as of writing; detailed citations are added as documentation is completed.

Consciousness

What traditions claim

Many hold that consciousness is fundamental — the ground of reality rather than a byproduct of the brain.

What's been observed

Specific experiences reliably correlate with brain activity; several theories model aspects of awareness. Anaesthesia and injury alter consciousness measurably.

What remains unknown

Why subjective experience exists at all — the "hard problem" — is unresolved. Whether consciousness is fundamental is an open philosophical question.

Near-Death Experiences

What traditions claim

Often cited as evidence that consciousness survives bodily death.

What's been observed

NDEs are well-documented and often profoundly meaningful. Some features correlate with brain states near crisis; accounts are consistent enough to study.

What remains unknown

Whether any experience occurs without brain function, and whether NDEs indicate survival of consciousness, is not established.

Meditation

What traditions claim

A path to insight, liberation, and direct knowledge of the nature of mind.

What's been observed Sci. Evidence

Among the better-supported areas: measurable effects on attention, stress markers, and some brain structures, with meaningful caveats about study quality.

What remains unknown

Which effects are specific to meditation vs. rest or expectation, and the reality of the deepest claimed states, remain debated.

Psychedelic Research

What traditions claim

Access to other realities, entities, or expanded consciousness.

What's been observed

Clinical trials show promise for certain conditions; these compounds reliably produce profound altered states and lasting shifts in outlook for some.

What remains unknown

Whether the experiences reveal anything beyond the mind is outside what the research can determine.

Free Will

What traditions claim

Varies widely — from radical free choice to the view that the separate chooser is itself an illusion.

What's been observed

Some experiments show brain activity preceding reported decisions; interpretation is heavily contested.

What remains unknown

The nature of free will is unresolved in both philosophy and science.

Quantum Mechanics (and its misconceptions)

What's often claimed

That quantum physics proves consciousness creates reality, or validates manifestation.

What's actually established Sci. Evidence

Quantum mechanics is a precise, well-tested theory. "Observation" refers to physical measurement/interaction, not a conscious mind willing outcomes.

The honest caveat

Interpretations of quantum theory differ, but none establish the popular metaphysical claims. We flag these as Unverified when they appear.

Extraterrestrial Life

What teachings claim

Some channeled teachings describe specific civilizations and ongoing contact with Earth.

What's been observed

No confirmed detection of extraterrestrial life to date. Exoplanet research and astrobiology make the broad question scientifically serious.

What remains unknown

Whether life exists elsewhere is open; claims of specific contact are Unverified.
